The skyline of Hulst is dominated by the monumental basilica, which stands in the heart of the fortified town, built in Brabant-Gothic style. The 60-meter high tower is visible from kilometers away. Located on the highest part of Hulst, the basilica appears to rise above the fortified town. In 2009, the H. Willibrordus Basilica was chosen as the "Most Beautiful Church in the Netherlands" by listeners and a jury from the NCRV program Plaza.
Construction of this church began as early as the 13th century. In the centuries that followed, significant expansions were realized. Over the years, the church has been rebuilt multiple times after several devastating tower fires. Famous master builders were involved in this work. The current tower dates from four different periods. The originally Catholic church has had many different users. From 1806, it even served as a simultaneous church. In 1929, Catholics purchased the Protestant part, after which a comprehensive restoration took place. The architectural additions enhanced the Catholic character, and for this reason, the church was elevated to basilica in 1935.
