The Engbertsdijksvenen is a remnant of the vast peat bog that once covered the northeast of the Netherlands. Various landscapes lie close to one another. The area features distinct elevation differences. The sandy higher parts are called haren, with the highest covered in forest. The toponym 'haar' appears in several names of villages in the area such as Kloosterhaar, Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk, and Bruinehaar. In the 15th century, the monks of the monastery in Sibculo began excavating raised bog.
