Le Engbertsdijksvenen sono un residuo del grande torbiera che un tempo copriva il nord-est dei Paesi Bassi. A breve distanza l'uno dall'altro si trovano diversi paesaggi. L'area presenta evidenti differenze di altitudine. Le parti più alte sabbiose sono chiamate haren, le più alte sono coperte da boschi. Il toponimo 'haar' compare in diversi nomi di villaggi nei dintorni come Kloosterhaar, Westerhaar-Vriezenveensewijk e Bruinehaar. Nel XV secolo i monaci del monastero di Sibculo cominciarono l'estrazione della torba alta.
