Remains of a fossil 'Fauna Zeelandica' can be found in the old beach deposit of the quarry in Nieuw-Namen. On the surface lies a fauna that is two million years old, consisting of animals that lived there at that time. This appears to be a mishmash of washed-up remains from different geological times. The Scheldt and its predecessors, along with the North Sea, contributed to the release and transport of fossils. The mentioned quarry is open to the public, but not for fossil collecting! The budding or experienced fossil enthusiast must go to the beach for that. A few beaches are historically known as good finding spots, namely Cadzand/Het Zwin, the Kaloot/Rammekens, and Westkapelle/Domburg. There, fossilized shark teeth, shells, and small bones wash up. From a tourism perspective, the shark teeth attract the most attention.
