The weighhouse is generally the center of a market town. Where trade takes place, goods are weighed and measured. To determine the correct weight of the merchandise, a market trader used to rely on the weighhouse, a public weighing house. Since when Leeuwarden has had a weighhouse is not exactly known. The oldest mention of a weighhouse in Leeuwarden dates back to 1483. This document also shows that the weighhouse was an established institution at that time. It is known that other Frisian cities had a weighhouse by the end of the fourteenth century. It is unlikely that Leeuwarden lagged behind in this development, so it is assumed that there was also a weighhouse in Leeuwarden as early as the fourteenth century.
