Near the village of Ouwerkerk on Schouwen-Duiveland, the water punched a huge hole in the dike in the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953. The village is located a few kilometers inland. The hole of Ouwerkerk is scouring out to the second largest of the entire disaster area. It is ultimately 200 metres wide and pushes 40 million cubic metres of water into the Vierbannenpolder twice a day. Of the 565 inhabitants of Ouwerkerk, 91 were killed. It gained national fame because it was only after nine months that it could be closed as the very last hole in the dike.
