En el pueblo de Ouwerkerk en Schouwen-Duiveland, el agua forma un enorme agujero en la duna la noche del 31 de enero al 1 de febrero de 1953. El pueblo se encuentra a unos kilómetros tierra adentro. El agujero de Ouwerkerk se ensancha hasta convertirse en el segundo más grande de toda la zona de desastre. Finalmente mide 200 metros de ancho y presiona 40 millones de metros cúbicos de agua hacia el polder de Vierbannen dos veces al día. De los 565 habitantes de Ouwerkerk, 91 mueren. Se hace conocido a nivel nacional porque no se puede cerrar hasta después de nueve meses, siendo el último agujero en la duna.
