Teylers Museum: the oldest museum in the Netherlands
Teylers opened its doors in 1784 and is now known as the oldest museum in the Netherlands. Ancient fossils, stunning stones, ingenious devices, precious books, fascinating coins and medals, fabulous drawings, and romantic paintings: the collection is unique in the world.
Here, art and science were encouraged, the earth and life were mapped, and new discoveries were made. Teylers was and still is a place to endlessly marvel. Not only at the collection but also at the halls and their decoration. The building is a museum piece in itself, a time machine, with the Oval Hall at its heart.
In the modern wing, there are constantly changing exhibitions. Sometimes about art, sometimes about science. In the old laboratory of Nobel Prize winner Hendrik Lorentz, you can visit the location theater performance The Lorentz Formula on weekends. Follow in the footsteps of Professor Einstein and Lorentz and see Teylers' masterpiece, the Great Electric Machine, come to life.
Pieter Teyler
Teylers owes its existence to Pieter Teyler (1702-1778), a wealthy resident of Haarlem. As a man of the Enlightenment, he believed it was important to spread knowledge about art and science among citizens for a better society. With the fortune he left behind, the museum could be built in phases and the collections acquired. Be sure to also take a look at Pieter Teyler's residence. This unique national monument opened to visitors at the end of 2021 after a thorough restoration, as a new wing of the museum.
