Open Air Museum Ellert and Brammert: Take a step back in time for a few hours!
"I am in a beautiful country," wrote Vincent van Gogh in 1883 to his brother Theo. The country he referred to was Drenthe. This province still breathes the atmosphere of years and even centuries gone by. Here, dolmens, prehistoric grave monuments, are excellently preserved, inviting tourists to take a significant step back in time.

This step back in time can be taken at the open-air museum "Ellert and Brammert" in Schoonoord. In this museum, located in the Ellertsveld region, the past of Southeast Drenthe comes alive. The living and lifestyle in this area is depicted through various forms of habitation. First and foremost is the `plaggenhut`. But a Saxon farmhouse, tollhouse, little schoolhouse, and even a prison are among the collection. In the old farmers' inn, snacks and drinks are also available. Various collections are housed in the exhibition buildings.

The giants Ellert and Brammert used to roam this area for their raids. They now stand as eye-catchers at the entrance of the museum. The legend is partially depicted in 3D in the lair of the two robbers. A playground and children’s farm complete the experience. The children's farm includes a 16-piece chicken coop, housing Drenthe chickens in various color patterns, as was common on farms throughout Drenthe in the past.
