Did you know that people do not say "I live IN Urk" but "ON Urk"? This has everything to do with the fact that Urk was an island until 1939. With the closure of the Zuiderzee with the Afsluitdijk and the reclamation of the sections of the inland sea, Urk became part of the mainland. Urk was a fishing island and was never enthusiastic about becoming part of the mainland. Furthermore, Urk was not a high priority for the Dutch government. The fact that Urk had to wait 9 years to get a road that would connect it to the Dutch road network shows that cool relationship. The people of Urk also expected to receive a large part of the fertile polders, but those were allocated to top farmers from the rest of the Netherlands, not Urk.
