Already in the early Middle Ages, Groningen was a central place, even though it was located at some distance from well-navigable waters. Located at the northern end of the Hondsrug, it developed from a villa, an agricultural settlement from the Carolingian period, into an oppidum, an urban settlement, by the twelfth century.
