Bereits in der frühen Mittelalter war Groningen ein zentraler Ort, auch wenn es etwas von gut befahrbarem Wasser entfernt lag. Am nördlichen Ende der Hondsrug gelegen, hatte es sich als Villa, eine landwirtschaftliche Siedlung aus der Karolingerzeit, im zwölften Jahrhundert zu einem Oppidum, einer städtischen Siedlung, entwickelt.
