The oldest station still in use in the Netherlands is also one of the most beloved. The romantic station building of Valkenburg dates back to 1853. It is built from marl and features corner towers and crenellations.
Architect Jacobus Enschede created this castle-like design, completely in line with the Valkenburg that became known as a spa resort for the well-to-do. Not long after, the Geul town developed as one of the first tourist destinations in the Netherlands.
On the occasion of KLM's 104th anniversary, this airline traditionally unveiled a Delft Blue house, an artistic replica of a notable existing building in our country. This 104th house is the Valkenburg Station, the oldest existing station in the Netherlands. Made from the marl that comes from our quarries. A beautiful promotional film was made by KLM, featuring a great view of Valkenburg, the region, and a special glimpse into our Municipal Cave.
Watch the video at the bottom of this page and let yourself be transported; come by train to Valkenburg and enjoy the unique Municipal Cave.
