Haarlem Station

Description

The first station of Haarlem opened on September 20, 1839, as part of the Amsterdam-Haarlem railway, the first railway line in the Netherlands. The first temporary station was located outside the city walls of Haarlem. In 1842, it was replaced by a permanent station on the north side of the city center, near the Stationsbuurt, with the Spaarnespoorbrug as a connection over the Spaarne. The original station building from 1842 was renovated in 1867 and replaced by a new building in art nouveau style by Dirk Margadant between 1906 and 1908. This building is one of the most notable in Haarlem and the only Dutch station in Jugendstil style. In 1953, a third platform was established along track 8, with architecture that contrasts with the rest of the building. The station has served as a location for various film shoots, such as "Als twee druppels water" and "Ocean's Twelve." In 2008, the current station building celebrated its hundredth anniversary with a grand party.

The first train ran in 1839 from Amsterdam to Haarlem at a speed of 40 km/h. The locomotive took half an hour for that. Nowadays, the train reaches a speed of 140 km/h and you can arrive at Amsterdam Central Station in 15 minutes.
