Castle Ter Does

Little is left above ground of the castle Ter Does. At the height of the bridge of the Achthovenerweg over the Does, there is a remarkable rise in the terrain – the site of the former castle – and some old garden walls can be seen. Around 1300, Ter Does took the form of a moated residential tower, around which a ring wall was later constructed. Between 1400 and 1450, this was replaced by a heavier version. Around 1500, some expansions took place. The oldest known descendant of the Van der Does family was Diederic, who was a vassal of the Count of Holland from 1281 to 1284. He may be the builder of the castle. At the end of the 15th century, Diederic's descendant Foy van der Does sold the castle to Arent van Yselsteyn. In the 16th century, it changed hands regularly until Pieter van der Does eventually bought it in 1591 and refurbished it. It is striking that he was not a descendant of the former residents of Ter Does but came from a different Van der Does family. Around 1640, the castle was demolished.
