The Reeuwijkse plassen are thirteen lakes between Bodegraven and Gouda, east of the village of Reeuwijk. They are separated by narrow roads. The lakes all have a rectangular shape, in which the former subdivision of the peatlands from the time of the 'Great Reclamation' can still be recognized. The total area is approximately 735 hectares.
With the exception of Broekvelden/Vettenbroek, the lakes were created in the 18th century by peat extraction. From the ribbon village of Sluipwijk, the peat was dredged far below the groundwater level, to be dried into peat that was stoked by the potteries and beer breweries of Gouda.
Today, the peat lakes are used for recreation.
