HOUSE BERGH

Huis Bergh Castle is located in 's-Heerenberg. The castle was built by the lords of Bergh. The origin of this genus is uncertain.
The castle Huis Bergh has an eventful building history. Since the 12th century, the castle has changed its appearance many times. In the Eighty Years' War, the former House of Bergh was seriously destroyed. Around 1600 the restoration of the castle began. Then it also gained the prestige that it still has today.
In 1712 Huis Bergh came into the possession of the von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family by inheritance. In 1735, the main castle of the castle burned down completely. The recovery was immediately undertaken. There was a circular roof and the windows were replaced by sliding windows for more light output. The castle was no longer inhabited after the fire but rented to various private individuals and institutions.
In 1912 Jan Herman van Heek, textie manufacturer in Enschede, bought the castle from the Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The castle was in a desolate state and was gradually restored by Van Heek. In 1939 there was another fire and after the recovery Van Heek transferred his property to the Huis Bergh Foundation in 1946.
