Since the mid-20th century, Bokhoven has gradually transformed from a community of farmers, fishermen, and bargees into a commuter village. The landscape around the village also changed. The old harbor was filled in. Due to land consolidation, many small plots with their characteristic wooded banks disappeared.
In July 1984, an extremely severe thunderstorm snapped the double rows of monumental Canadian poplars on either side of the dike to Engelen like matchsticks, leaving a stripped land behind. What remained of the vegetation was lost due to the dike elevation following the flood risk of 1995. This damage has been partially repaired through various replanting projects that the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch carried out in cooperation with the residents, especially in the village center itself. Since new construction was kept modest (a maximum of one house per year is allowed), the rural character of the village was preserved.
