About 500 years ago, the Waag, the impressive building in the middle of the Nieuwmarkt, was still called Sint Antoniespoort. The building was one of the three important city gates. This gate, which also served as a defensive stronghold, was built in 1488. As a result of the city's expansion in the late 16th century, Sint Antoniespoort lost its function as a city gate. In 1614, the part of the Kloveniersburgwal around the gate was filled in to create a new market square (hence the Nieuwmarkt). Thus, part of the gate disappeared underground. However, it is still possible to pass under it by boat. Not only markets were held in the square: there were also corporal punishments and executions carried out. The square in front of the Waag was also used for fairs for the poor. Markets are still held on the Nieuwmarkt, with a market for organic products every Saturday.
