The Schoonoord windmill in Alverna, municipality of Wijchen, province of Gelderland, is a round stone belt mill from 1887. The mill stands on a relatively low belt next to the former Schoonoord monastery, which was built at the same time and was demolished in 1980. The mill is situated on the site of a post mill that was destroyed by fire. The mill itself has also been ravaged by fire twice, in 1890 and 1941. During the war, the mill was used by the resistance to signal. The mill underwent restorations in 1965 and 1987; it was kept in a condition to turn but did not operate anymore. In 2003, a fire broke out in a neighboring shed, causing damage to the mill again, which was repaired in 2005-6. Since 2006, the mill turns again occasionally. Unique is that the authentic operational machinery from 1887 is still present, although it has not been used for decades. The mill can thus still be made operational for milling.
