Abcoude

The name Abcoude caught my attention the first time I drove to Amsterdam because I found it remarkable that there is a place name that starts with abc... What I didn't know at the time is what a beautiful little village lay behind this remarkable name. Abcoude is a small village south of Amsterdam, with less than 9,000 inhabitants. The land area is a peat landscape that is crossed by the small rivers Gein, Gaasp, and Angstel. Surrounding Abcoude is the Gein area, which is still an almost untouched prime example of a Dutch polder landscape with its green meadows, watercourses, and farms, which has frequently attracted writers and painters and nowadays draws many nature lovers and recreators. The cores Abcoude and Baambrugge have emerged on and along the banks of Angstel and Gein. Also located in Abcoude is Fort Abcoude, which was part of the fortification line south of Amsterdam.
