Griendtsveen, The Netherlands

Griendtsveen is a village in the Dutch province of Peel. It belongs to the municipality of Horst aan de Maas, in the Dutch province of Limburg. On January 1, 2021, the village had 535 inhabitants. Griendtsveen was founded around 1885. The history of Griendtsveen is closely intertwined with the reclamation of the Peel. The railway line from Eindhoven to Venlo, built in 1866, was of great importance in the reclamation of the peat bog. The contractor of this railway line was Jan van de Griendt, a merchant from Den Bosch. In 1853 he was one of the founders of the "Maatschappij tot ontginning en vervening van de Peel", later renamed "Maatschappij Helenaveen". Van de Griendt founded the village of Helenaveen. His sons Jozef and Eduard continued his work and founded the village of Griendtsveen; both villages are connected by the Helena Canal. Helenaveen is located in North Brabant, Griendtsveen in Limburg. The Griendtsveen Peat Litter Company was active in Griendtsveen.
