Buunerbult

At the Noorderesch of the village of Buinen, you have a fantastic view. In the village, they call that place the Buunerbult. Looking east, you can see the Veenkoloniën for miles. On the other side lies the Hondsrug across the Voorste Diep. Here at the Buunebult, you can experience the differences in elevation as they were shaped during the ice ages.

The Buunerbult also used to be part of the Hondsrug. At the end of the Saale ice age, enormous amounts of meltwater collected on both sides of the Hondsrug. On the west side, the water rose so high that a stream could break through the hills. Between Borger and Buinen, the Hondsrug was washed away. From the wildly flowing river of that time, only the small Voorste Diep remained. Further to the north, the diep merges with the Achterste Diep to form the Hunze. Here at the foot of the Buunerbult, the Voorste Diep has been excavated to become the Buinen-Schoonoord Canal.
