Graauw

Graauw was already mentioned at the end of the 13th century. In the 19th-century church of the village hangs a bell that uniquely symbolizes the well-being and especially the woes of the region. It is the ringing bell from the then-village of Namen, which drowned in a flood in 1715. Now the village lies under a thick layer of mud in the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe, which lies about two kilometers further ahead of you in a straight line. This 3,000-hectare nature reserve mainly consists of mudflats, salt marshes, and channels, providing a permanent, safe habitat for many breeding birds and a varied flora. If you want to explore the Drowned Land of Saeftinghe, it is best to be guided because the soil and the suddenly rising tide can be very treacherous.
