Leermens is a village in the municipality of Eemsdelta in the Dutch province of Groningen. It had 175 inhabitants on January 1, 2021. Leermens is a terp village, formed on a floodplain ridge along the Fivelboezem. It is believed to have originated at the beginning of the Common Era. The terp is one of the highest in the province. The first mention of the village dates back to the 10th century when it was written as Lethermengi. A document from 1040 records King Henry III granting the goods of a certain Uffo and his brothers, located at Lintherminge and nearby Eenum, to Bishop Bernold of Utrecht. However, the meaning of the village's name has older roots and is thought to be derived from the Germanic Linthihrabningja. This could mean 'belonging to the gentle raven' or 'people of the gentle raven'. The later name Letherminge was transformed into Leermens via Leermsum in the early 15th century, with the suffix -ens indicating 'joint inhabitants'.
