Bergharen

Bergharen, also known as the Lourdes of Maas en Waal, has had a Marian devotion since the beginning of the 14th century from the Kapelberg; a public prayer site located on the hill behind the mill. The first initiative for the Marian devotion was the purchase of land in 1302 by the Abbey of the Order of Cistercians, after which the construction of a monastery began. Around 1672, the monastery was demolished by order of the government. After the chapel was torn down, the site was even guarded to put an end to the popular devotion. However, the Marian devotion continued unabated. In the chapel, which dates from 1948, there is now a replica of a statue of the Mother of Sorrows with the lifeless body of her Son on her lap. The original statue is a wood carving, and due to weather influences, a replica of this statue was made; the original has been moved to the parish church.


Around the chapel is a Stations of the Cross park, which features fourteen stations depicting the Passion of Jesus, making this place a site of grace for many.


The windmill 'De Verrekijker' was built in 1904 and is rented out as group accommodation.
