Fort Abcoude

Enthusiastic entrepreneurs ‘The Cabbage, the Goat and the Wolf’ offer unique experiences at Fort Abcoude. They will soon open a tasting room that showcases special products from local entrepreneurs. The Fort at Abcoude is also available as a workshop, meeting, or working space and is open to entrepreneurs looking for a space to practice their profession, passion, or craft.

Every second Saturday from May to September, and on the second Saturday and Sunday and the fourth Sunday of September, guides from the Fort Abcoude Foundation will take you on a tour. The tours last one and a half hours and start as soon as more visitors have gathered. Included is a demonstration with the salute battery, always a special event. A small fee is requested.

History
Fort at Abcoude is the first-built fort of the Defense Line and is surrounded by nature. The fort, partly made of brick and partly of brick concrete, is a unique intermediate form of the older brick forts of the Holland Water Line and the later concrete forts of the Defense Line. Fort at Abcoude is located directly on the south side of the built-up area of Abcoude.

The Fort at Abcoude was constructed between 1883 and 1885. It served to defend the accesses formed by the Utrecht–Amsterdam railway line and the rivers Angstel and Gein with roads running alongside.
