Due to the flood disaster of February 1, 1953, Kruiningen was also heavily affected. The dikes on either side of the (former) ferry port broke, and the Kruiningen polder was completely submerged, turning Zuid-Beveland back into an island. The force of the water was so great that the ferry broke loose and drifted through the breach in the dike, coming to rest 1.5 km inland. A total of 77 residents of Eastern Zuid-Beveland, 62 of whom were in Kruiningen, lost their lives during the night of the disaster. An impressive statue has been placed for them near the church of Kruiningen, made by Jan Wolkers, with a poem by Henriëtte Roland Holst:
“Do you hear the sea behind my heart?
then I will be gone
and you will be alone with the sea
The waves break in your heart.”
