Castle Ulenpas

Castle Ulenpas is a Dutch castle in Hoog-Keppel, centrally located in the municipality of Bronckhorst in the Gelderland Achterhoek. The date of its establishment is not known; it should have originated somewhere in the 14th century. In the year 1400, Diederik van Baak sold the house to Herman Rouwenoort. This Rouwenoort family remained the owners of Ulenpas for centuries. The castle was presumably remodeled around the year 1660 by Hendrik van Rouwenoort. Castle Ulenpas was the headquarters of Louis XIV of France during the Dutch War in the disaster year of 1672. In 1812, the house came to the Van der Borch family through the marriage of an heiress. The Van der Borch-van Rouwenoort couple sold it to a member of the Van Herzeele family, after which it passed by marriage to the Van Schuylenburch family. This family would own the house for many years. During a raging fire in 1965, the house was largely burned down. Despite the reconstruction of the castle, it has never regained the allure of yesteryear but is still beautifully situated. The castle is not accessible to the public but can be seen from the public road.
