The early years of Dudok

The later famous architect Willem Dudok was the master builder at this fort, simultaneously with the Fort at Drecht and Fort Uithoorn.

This fort could accommodate 250 to 300 soldiers who had to survive there for several months to a year. The fort operated as a self-sufficient system.

Rainwater from the roof was collected in cisterns and purified through a treatment facility to make it suitable for drinking water. Through drinking water reservoirs that hung from the ceiling, the soldiers had running water in the kitchen, laundry rooms, and toilets. An unprecedented luxury for that time! At home, the water usually still came from the well.
