A narrow path runs along the Vecht. This is the old towpath, over which walked the horse that pulled the barge. The barge was the most important means of transport in the Netherlands until the 19th century. Transportation by water was a lot more comfortable than driving on bumpy dirt paths. Between Vreeland and Nieuwersluis the towpath has been completely restored, so you can take a beautiful walk directly along the water.
Along the towpath you can moor your sloop (3 x 24 hours) to enter the village or to walk a bit on the path. The towpath leads to Nieuwersluis, where you can cross the bridge to walk back along the other bank of the Vecht. That walk takes about an hour. But of course you can also just walk back and forth for ten minutes on the towpath, to experience walking so close to the water and the slightly further away country estate Nieuwerhoek.
