Since January 2019, Schiermonnikoog Monastery has been a monastery for Cistercian monks who have been living on Schiermonnikoog since 2015, after leaving their abbey in Diepenveen. Until 2019, the building was used as a country house, hotel and youth hostel under the name Rijsbergen. The country house Rijsbergen was built in 1757 by Tjarda van Starkenborch Stachouwer, lord of Rijsbergen, the then owner of the island of Schiermonnikoog. The original residence of the Stachouwer family was in the village of Westerburen, which has disappeared into the sea over time. The Stachouwer family took the initiative to move the settlement on Schiermonnikoog in an easterly direction. The residence built by them was also used by their successors, respectively John Eric Banck and Count Berthold von Bernstorff, as their official residence on Schiermonnikoog. Banck gave the building a new neoclassical appearance in 1860.
