The pumping station of Sasse is located near the John S. Thompson Bridge in Grave. This pumping station allows water from the Peel to flow into the Maas via the stream Raam. The pumping station of Sasse is the first electric pumping station built in the region by the then water board De Maaskant. The pumping station became necessary due to the construction of a weir in the Maas, which raised the water level. As a result, the Raam could no longer discharge its water directly into the Maas. The pumping station was built in 1928-1929 and was put into operation in 1929. Around 1950 and again in 1981, part of the equipment was modernized. The pumping station is named after Jhr. mr. A.F.O. van Sasse van Ysselt, the first chairman of the water board De Maaskant. The pumping station is now a national monument. On November 14, 2010, the pumping station had to be turned on for the first time in twelve years.
