In 1634, the piece of land where Schaep en Burgh now stands came into the possession of the wealthy Amsterdammer Abel Mathijsz. Burgh. Descriptions of Burgh's possessions, drawn up after his death in 1646, show that the homestead he founded in 's-Graveland had grown into a place of considerable prestige. There was not only a house, there was also a gardener's house, a horse stable, orchard, barns and haystacks. He had no children, his five cousins received the inheritance. Gerard Simonsz. Schaep got the land at the Noordereinde from his uncle's inheritance. That explains the name: Schaep en Burgh.
