The Roman Catholic St. Martin's Church in Groningen, not to be confused with the Gothic Martinikerk in the same city, was built in 1895 on the site of the medieval Broerkerk, opposite the Academy Building.
The neo-Gothic brick basilica was designed by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers. He was inspired by the design of the former Broerkerk. To distinguish the church from the previously built St. Joseph's Church, the building was also given a transept. The interior was simple, with round natural stone columns. The grand spatial effect created by the use of large and high arcades surprised even the architect himself. The apse had very narrow lancet windows. A tower was not feasible, and instead, a wooden crossing tower and a polygonal, narrow stair tower were placed next to the façade. With a construction cost of 132,000 guilders, it was the most expensive Catholic church built in Groningen since the reduction.
