Gaarkeuken Lock is a lock in the Van Starkenborgh Canal near Gaarkeuken in the municipality of Westerkwartier in the province of Groningen. The canal is CEMT-class Va. The current lock in Gaarkeuken was constructed between 1975 and 1980 and cost 20 million guilders at the time. The official opening of the lock took place on October 17, 1980, by the queen's commissioner Edzo Toxopeus. The current lock is the third to be built at this location: In 1864, a small lock was constructed north of the then Kolonelsdiep, measuring 26 by 2 meters with a depth of 2 meters. With the increase in shipping traffic, a new lock was installed in 1924, measuring 190 by 10 meters with a depth of 3 meters. This lock was severely damaged during World War II. Due to the increase in shipping traffic, the current lock was finally built in the 1970s.
