Church of Pietersbierum

A dilapidated medieval church dedicated to Peter was replaced in 1822. This church was struck by lightning on October 14, 1843, and burned down. On July 26, 1845, the first stone for the new church of the Reformed congregation was laid by Hendrik Bonifacius van der Haer, the district chief of Barradeel. The neoclassical hall church with a three-sided closed choir was built according to a design by Thomas Adrianus Romein. The first stone for the new tower was laid on July 2, 1878. The tower, consisting of three sections with a slender spire, features neo-Gothic elements. The bell requisitioned by the German occupier in 1943 was replaced in 1949 by a bell from the Van Bergen bell foundry. The interior is covered by a plastered wooden vault. The church building is a national monument.
