The Westenberg barracks in Schalkhaar are named after Major General Westenberg who fought as a lieutenant colonel in the battle of Quatre Bras and was awarded the Military William Order in 1815.
This so-called 'border barracks' was designed in the thirties of the twentieth century by captain of engineers A.G. Boost. The barracks were not yet ready at the outbreak of the Second World War and were completed by the Germans. From 1941 to 1944 the barracks was used by the Police Training Battalion. After the war, from 1945 to 1992, the barracks were used by the Royal Netherlands Army. Especially the 13th armored infantry battalion "Garde Fuseliers Prinses Irene" used the barracks for a long time, namely from 1953 to 1992.
