Archemerberg

The Archemerberg is a hill in the Overijssel municipality of Ommen near the hamlet of Archem. The Archemerberg is part of a moraine that was created in the penultimate ice age. The Archemerberg and the more southerly Lemelerberg were created in the penultimate ice age, the Saalien. The Besthmenerberg, Sallandse Heuvelrug and the lower moraines at Daarle and Hoge Hexel were also created at that time. The advancing land ice has pushed large amounts of frozen sand, gravel and clay, mainly deposited by rivers, in front of them and stacked on top of each other like large scales. The material carried by the ice, the ground moraine, boulder clay with many stray stones from Scandinavia, can be found along the edge of the moraine. In many places, the boulder loam has eroded, leaving a sprinkling of stones.
