In 1986, an idea competition with the theme 'Nederland Rivierenland' was at the cradle of the creation of this unique nature reserve. The winner was 'Plan Ooievaar'. After much discussion and with great detours, implementation was decided and The Blue Room was one of the two projects that were the first to be realized. Part of the plan was that the summer dike of the Rhine was cut so that the water in the area was given free rein. The name 'Blue Room' comes from a former homestead that can already be seen on a map from 1636. Meanwhile, in 2017, 71 different bird species were found in the area, including the water ral, kingfisher, bluethroat, nightingale and bush warbler. Among the permanent residents are also the spoonbill and the cormorant. The fish and white-tailed eagle also come here regularly to forage. The area is grazed by Konik horses and Galloway cattle. Because an open connection has been made with the forest on the Grebbeberg, you can also encounter these grazers there. The Utrechts Landschap has set up an information centre there.
