The Hoekse Waard is part of the sea clay landscape of South Holland and Zeeland. This area varied from sea to land and vice versa until the poldering definitively protected it from the sea. Before the poldering, the area was characterized by creeks and sandbanks. The open landscape is primarily determined by the marine clay deposits that occurred here.
