The Hoeksche Waard is an island in the Dutch province of South Holland. The island is one of the 20 national landscapes in the Netherlands. The Hoeksche Waard consists almost entirely of polders. It is an agricultural island with lots of nature. The Hoeksche Waard also has many dikes. Within the boundaries of the Hoeksche Waard lies the Binnenmaas lake, a remnant of the Roman-Medieval Meuse. The open landscape is characterized on the one hand by the pattern of polders bordered by narrow dikes with vegetation and sometimes ribbon development and on the other hand by the remnants of creeks with creek ridges and peat remnants with an irregular strip allotment in the Oudeland van Strijen.
