The canal village lies on the Extended Hoogeveense Vaart, locally referred to as the Van Echtenskanaal. In the late 1970s, the canal in the center was partially filled in, making continuous navigation no longer possible. In 2005, construction began on a shopping apartment complex, locally known as "'t Schip". This was opened in 2007. The municipality of Emmen has formulated a plan to make navigation around Klazienaveen possible again, although the municipality does not yet know when the waterway will be constructed. The A37 runs alongside the area. The new waterway Koning Willem-Alexanderkanaal was opened in June 2013 for recreational boating. Klazienaveen is originally a peat colony, established in the 19th century by W.A. Scholten, an industrialist from Groningen. He named the place after his wife Klaziena Sluis.[1] On January 14, 1904, Klazienaveen received a connection via steam tram when the DSM opened the line Erica - Klazienaveen. In 1907, this line was extended to Emmer-Compascuum and later that year to Ter Apel. The connection to Ter Apel was discontinued in 1940. The remaining lines were discontinued in 1947.
As of 2004, there is a horticultural area characterized by many greenhouses. In Klazienaveen-Noord, the estate Scholtenszathe is being developed, where residential construction, reforestation, recreation, and nature development are combined. In Klazienaveen, there is a factory of Norit, where activated carbon is produced. Previously, the raw material was black peat, sourced from the peat extraction in the area. In April 2004, a new factory was opened.
