After 1500 years of history, a fire and an earthquake, the Sint-Landricus church can still be admired in Echt.
The origins of the parish of Echt go back more than 1500 years.
It is therefore not surprising that the Echter Sint-Landricus Church has already endured a lot. For example, after the liberation of Echt in 1945, the heavily damaged spire collapsed after a strong westerly wind, the church was hit by a severe fire more than twenty years later and suffered damage from an earthquake in 1992.
Miraculously, the church survived. In the meantime, St. Landricus Church has been officially elevated to a place of pilgrimage for Saint Edith Stein, who lived in Echt from 1938 to 1942. The choir robe she wore can still be seen in the church. Next to the choir robe hangs a triptych by the Echter artist Karin Deneer in which an image of Edith Stein with choir robe, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross is incorporated. After her arrest by the Gestapo, the choir cloak remained in the convent and now hangs at this memorial site.
Outside the church, this co-patroness of Europe and the other Jewish victims of World War II is still
commemorated by means of the monument that you can see on the edge of the church square.
St. Landricus' Church is one of the wonder locations on the Route full of Wonder. During this cycle route through the Grensmaas Valley, more than 30 locations can be visited digitally when they are not open to the public. Curious about the stories or take a look inside?
