The Ravensbosch Monastery is a former monastery located in the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in the Dutch province of Limburg. The monastery is situated in the far north of the municipality, west of Arensgenhout and east of Ravensbosch. On the northern side of that forest, not far from the monastery, lies the site where the Roman villa Op den Billich was discovered.
History
In 1885, the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary built a monastery, which included a school and a boarding house for training new priests.
In 1890, the east wing was raised with three additional floors.
In 1896, the three extra floors were reinforced by three tower staircases.
In 1900, a chapel was constructed in contrasting style, designed by architect Peters from Aachen.
At the end of the 20th century, the monastery was sold, and in 1993, a new complex with linked bungalows was built next to the original complex.
Structure
The white building is constructed in a neoclassical style and has an E-shape. Centrally located behind the old entrance is the chapel made of brick. The chapel has three naves, round arches, and large capitals resting on heavy pillars.
