The canal crosses the entire Gelderse Vallei from south to north. The oldest part dates back to the Middle Ages and was dug between Rhenen and Veenendaal and served to extract peat.
The section from Veenendaal to Amersfoort was mainly intended to improve the drainage from the Gelderse Vallei. The way the canal looks now dates back to the 1930s. In addition to drainage, it also had the purpose of reinforcing the Grebbe Line. Northwest of Amersfoort, the canal connects to the river De Eem, draining the water into the IJsselmeer.
