Two hemispheres

Twee halve bollen is a work of art that has been located since 1990 in the eastern verge of the A50 in the municipality of Apeldoorn near Woeste Hoeve in the forest area of Beekbergen. The work was created by artist Joos Clijsen. Clijsen made the artwork in 1988 for an exhibition at the Castle Groeneveld in Baarn, called "Beeld en Park". In 1988, the municipalities of Apeldoorn, Brummen and Voorst came up with the idea of buying the artwork for 50,000 guilders. They wanted to place the artwork along the A50, the section between the Waterberg junction and Hoenderloo was partly opened in 1988 and partly in 1990, to thank the responsible State Secretary. However, the municipalities of Brummen and Voorst later abandoned the project and therefore the municipality of Apeldoorn bought the artwork alone. After the bulbs were purchased, the art committee applied for a permit and then looked for a location for the artwork. In the end, a green strip along the highway was chosen. In 1990, the artwork was placed there. The bulbs were removed from summer 2010 to 7 September 2011 for a restoration, during which the bulbs were completely taken apart.
