Old church

The Old Church is a former Reformed church building in Sleeuwijk, actually De Werken. It is located at Kerkeinde 32 at the foot of the dike.
In the 16th century, a chapel was built here, which must have been a simple aisle church. When the Merwededijk was breached by the Sea Beggars in 1589, this church was heavily damaged. It came into the hands of the Reformed and restoration work was carried out. While there was already a 3/8 choir closure, a similar closure was added to the west side in 1613 - 1614. As such, the church can be regarded as an example of early Protestant church architecture. In 1856, plastering was applied, as well as a barrel vault and tie beams. Between 1902 and 1910, some changes made in 1856 were undone, but the barrel vault and tie beams were retained. Later, a few extensions were added, but the majority of the masonry is still from the 16th and 17th centuries.
