Blooming verges, Steegstraat and Voerstraat Caestert (Eijsden)

In the Steegstraat and Voerstraat, you pass by various types of verges. Blooming verges adorn the street. To achieve a beautiful blooming verge, it is important that the verge is not too narrow, so that a short strip can be mowed regularly for safety. Behind this, plants can bloom and set seed. A border of shrubs completes the verge. This layering provides a great variety of plants, nectar, and berries. This in turn attracts insects, insect-eaters like hedgehogs and birds. The soil should also not be too rich or constantly disturbed; otherwise, nettles, field thistles, and other pioneer plants will appear. These plants are generally undesirable in gardens and fields, but in nature, they are important food plants for nectar-feeders, caterpillars, and thus butterflies. Sun and shade also play a significant role in the presence of plants; just think of the names of sun rose on sunny calcareous soil and shade crosswort in a forest.
