Kasteellaan 1, Oost (Oost-Maarland): Kasteel Oost

Kasteel Oost was originally a moated residential tower and was the seat of a lordship under the duchy of Daelhem. This residential tower forms the core of the current mansion and consisted of a cellar with three floors above it, with a total height of at least twelve meters. The oldest masonry currently present in one of the side walls is made of rubble stone and probably dates from the 12th or 13th century. The residential tower was built in 1548 from marlstone and integrated into a renovation that included a brick extension made of coal sandstone of equal size to the residential tower. The entrance was moved to a newly built octagonal stair tower. This tower is still a defining feature of the current building. The construction year 1548 is visible in a sculpted frieze.
In 1674, a renovation was carried out by Ulrich Anton Hoen from the family of the lords of Hoensbroeck, and in 1848 it was renovated again, where it was provided with a Swiss gable roof with overhangs.
In the 1950s, the castle was altered so drastically that little remained of its original structure, giving the castle a country house-like appearance.
